Game Review: Infected for PSP

Infected is a fast-paced third-person shooter developed by Planet Moon Studios and published by Majesco Entertainment. Released in 2005, the game brings an exciting and chaotic blend of action, humor, and holiday-themed zombie mayhem to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). In Infected, you play as Officer Stevens, a New York cop immune to a deadly virus that turns people into vicious, bloodthirsty zombies. It’s up to you to stop the infection from spreading by blasting through hordes of zombies in a variety of missions.

Gameplay

The core gameplay of Infected centers around wiping out waves of infected zombies using a unique mechanic—your blood is the cure! Players have to first weaken zombies with traditional gunfire and then “infect” them by charging up and unleashing a special viral grenade that disintegrates them in a glorious explosion of gore. The game’s action is fast, frantic, and downright satisfying, with plenty of weapons to choose from, such as shotguns, submachine guns, and plasma rifles.

However, one downside is that the controls can feel a little clunky, especially when aiming or trying to switch between targets quickly. This can make some of the more intense moments of combat feel frustrating, but it’s manageable with practice.

One standout feature is the multiplayer mode. Infected offers competitive online play, where players could spread their own “infected” avatars to other players, creating an innovative blend of viral marketing and game mechanics. Unfortunately, since the PSP’s online services have been discontinued, this unique multiplayer feature is no longer available, but it was an interesting concept during its time.

Graphics and Sound

For a 2005 PSP game, Infected delivers respectable graphics. The game’s environments are set against a wintery, holiday-themed New York City, and while the level design can feel repetitive at times, the sheer chaos of zombie-slaying keeps things exciting. The zombies themselves are grotesque and come in many forms, making them as terrifying as they are humorous.

Sound design is one of the game’s strong points. The soundtrack includes licensed tracks from bands like Slipknot, providing an intense, high-energy background to the relentless action. The voice acting, especially the wisecracking protagonist, adds some fun personality to the experience.

Verdict

Infected offers a unique twist on the zombie shooter genre with its viral infection mechanic and fast-paced action. The game’s holiday-themed, over-the-top style, combined with its humor and chaotic gameplay, makes it a fun experience for those looking for something different on the PSP. The now-defunct multiplayer mode was a standout feature, but even without it, Infected holds up as an entertaining single-player shooter with a lot of charm. Just be prepared to work around the somewhat clunky controls.

Rating: 7.5/10
For players who enjoy zombie shooters and crave non-stop action, Infected is definitely worth checking out!
